What is Reflexology
Reflexologists believe that reflex points on the feet mirror the organs and systems of the body.
Reflexology is an ancient therapy of acupressure, dating back to over 4000 years, first practiced by Native Indians, the Chinese and the Egyptians. '
Using thumb and finger techniques on reflex points on the feet the Reflexologist will use acupressure techniques, in order to stimulate healing, or to clear energy pathways or blockages (meridians) that run throughout the body. It is also used to clear blockages within Chakras to increase energy flow.
As different reflex points on the feet or hands, mirror certain areas of the body, it makes it possible for the Reflexologist to discover parts of your body that are 'disturbed' or ' out of balance ' or congested' he/she will then work to rebalance them. Sometimes this will take more that just one treatment, depending upon how long the condition has been present.
Reflexology is a holistic treatment, which means it not only works on a prevailing condition, but also encourages the body to heal itself as a whole.
It may be used once a week or once a month, as part of a healthy maintenance program, alongside good nutrition and regular exercise, in order to reduce the risk of long term ailments.
Today in the world reflexology it is practiced in Hospitals, Clinical centers and Hospices, as a valid complimentary support and integration to standard therapies (cancer, pregnancy, pain, stress and anxiety disorders, etc.) or as a substitute of some pharmacological procedures (in some limited situations) and as an useful instrument in relaxing and anti-stress therapies. In the United States, United Kingdom, China, India, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway it is already widely used and gaining in recognition.
Ayurvedic and Indian tradition
Ayurveda (Sanskrit: आयुर्वेद; Āyurveda) "The complete knowledge for long life" Ayurvedic medicine is a system of traditional medicine native to India. Also in this tradition the use of massaging some feet points is known.
It is said that the knowledge and techniques of this 2,000 year-old massage therapy were the closely held secrets of the Buddhist monks of the Thai Royal Palace; kept alive and passed down through generations.
Thai foot massage is a smorgasbord of ancient healing therapies of Reflexology, Chinese Tuina, Japanese Shiatsu and Indian Ayurvedic yoga. Working with the feet, lower leg and knees and often uses Thai sticks.
Reflexology and the Egyptions
Reflexology dates back to 2330 BC as some inscriptions were found displaying ancient Egyptians practicing this kind of medical treatment. Ancient Chinese and Japanese techniques emerged in the East as well. The sun temple of the sixth dynasty (Old Kingdom)Ancient Egyptian pharaoh Niuserre features depictions of the king enjoying a foot massage and scenes on the temple walls depict the preparation of oils. Another reference to massage therapy during the sixth dynasty of Ancient Egypt can be found in the tomb of Ankhmahor (also known as “The Tomb of the Physician”). In this tomb two men are depicted having work done on their feet and hands.
